Mil - Pale Colour Test

This article was published Mar 26, 2020.

I was not satisfied with previous blue colour I used on my guns, so I asked the NGRM forum about ideas. This is the result of some of those ideas and self experimenting.

I took a piece of left-over hull section from the Monitor Sölve I did last year. Since it was printed in yellow PLA, I did first airbrush it in a neutral middle gray mixed from Tamiya black-n-white, no colours involved. After fully dried with a hairdryer I marked out 9 boxes with a pen.

  1. First box is the control box, only the 70.884 deep sky blue paint I want, but as pale.
  2. Second I first painted 70.001 white two times with hairdryer inbetween (did not cover w only one). After 15+ layers of veeery thin blue mixed with thinner, I gave up... It only looked like a very light blue. Continued with a bit thicker mix and added a few more layers, still only light blue. Need to do a re-check on this method, cause sounded good at first.
  3. Third box blue again and mixed with 71.050 light gray. It actually got a bit pale´ish ..
  4. Fourth box, blue mixed with 70.964 field blue gray. This I liked but the colour still felt a bit "strong", so on
  5. Fifth box I added thinned out black wash on top. Got way to dark.
  6. Sixth box is same as third, blue with light gray, but this time I added a bit thinned black wash directly in the paint. It got some blue colour in it still, but in my eyes more gray then blue ..

Conclusion :: Well, I got closer, but not close enough. I will continue testing. I have three more boxes not used as you can see and also another monitor hull section to use, prepared with the middle gray and all.
